Ethiopia sage (Salvia officinalis) is an aromatic plant that has an origin in the Mediterranean. It develops into green oval-shaped leaves that are a normal sight in herbal gardens in many garden sage-growing parts of the world. Its leaves serve as spice with a bitter taste. They also have an aroma that derives from the oil content that is available in 1 to 1.5 percent concentration in each leaf.

Like most other herbs, sage comes with a well balanced nutrient composition. Iron content is the second highest at 156 percent of the daily value for oxygen transportation in blood. Vitamin C for boosting bodily immunity represents 54 percent of the daily value. Vitamin B-6 is 135% of the daily value for better absorption of nutrients and overcoming kidney ailments. The magnesium content is 107% of the daily requirements for better nutrient metabolism and strong bones. The highest component in the sage is dietary fiber which is 160 percent of the daily needs which boosts digestion.

We source Ethiopia sage from Wondo Genet, Hawassa and Holleta. The first two regions are in southern Ethiopia while the last is in the central parts in the heart of Oromia. Our family growers cultivate the crop in irrigated format. They also farm other herbal crops like basil, tarragon and parsley. Their cultivation methods are organic in nature as they use no chemicals and only enrich the soil with farm post manure.

Upon each harvest of Ethiopia sage, we force cool the crop to remove any excess field heat. Force-cooling does not usually happen if we do our picking during the early morning when the temperatures are still low.

We pack Ethiopia sage in perforated bags that allow in air. This also keeps the herbs free of condensation as the moisture finds egress out of the polyerythene bags. Each package consists of fresh or dried leaves that are still green. We keep them inside the jute bags in bales of at least 10 leaves per bunch. We then strap them as fresh delicate cargo in metal strapped cartons to indicate fragility and thus reduce shaking during airport handling.

We keep Ethiopia sage in cold rooms at freezing temperature of around 0° Celsius. This guarantees a length shelf life of around 21 to 30 days. The herb also stores well in higher temperatures of around 5°C with a shelf life of between 14 and 21 days. During storage, our warehouse’s relative humidity clocks at 95 percent and above.

Our transportation guidelines for Ethiopia sage are the same ones for all other herbs: we use refrigerated trucks that provide fast transition to the airport on the same day of the harvest. You can expect the shipment to reach your destination on the same day or a maximum two days upon dispatch.

We take are of all your processing details right from packing the Ethiopia sage in pre-cooled clamshells or strapped cartons. Our quality parameters are evident in the fresh, green form of the produce that arrives without loss of color at your destination. This is because we source them from Global Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)-certified farmers. We ship the produce in the quantity you specify at the most affordable prices in the regional market.
