Ethiopia pili nuts come from the tree that is botanically known as Canarium ovatum. The tree is native to the Philippines but enjoys growth in other parts of the tropics where the weather is free of frost. Local people enjoy eating the succulent part of the fruit for energy purposes and the high manganese content for healthy bone formation. However, the oily seed which undergoes processing is inedible and serves the commercial purpose of the tree, in the producing of cooking oil. The oil also serves in lighting lamps, while the seed’s hard shell serves as a source of industrial fuel. Normally, the nut’s seed is exported with its husk or shell intact after the de-pulping of the fruit.

Statistics from 1993 to 2008 show that all pulse crops in Ethiopia, including pili nuts, have averaged at around 13 percent of the total cropland/hectarage. The Pili tree matures after seven to ten years of planting. The husk of the fruit is usually between 6 to 7 centimeters in length. Its pulp consists of a succulent substance that encloses a pear-shaped seed. It is the seed, however, that consists of the oil inside its hardcore endocarp cover or kernel. The main commercial use of the fruit is in the production of oil, with each fruit having at least 71% of the end-product.

The nutritional content of pili nuts is mainly oil. The fruit has 15 percent of the daily value of folate while the vitamin B1 folate is as high as 79 percent of the daily value. Minerals include calcium, at 145 milligrams, representing 15 percent of the daily value and manganese at more than 100 percent of the total needs, per day.

We source our Ethiopia pili nuts from the low-lying regions of the country. The crop does well under well-watered conditions but is not conducive to icy weather, thus the preference for the Ethiopian lowlands. Our family growers can produce at least 33 kilos of the fruits per tree.

We use produce agents to supervise the safe harvesting of the Ethiopia pili nuts. Though the traditional method is that of shaking the branches to gather the seeds, we usually employ long poles with catching nets for harvesting the fruits. This reduces contamination or breakage.

Due to the minimal shelf life of the fruits, we pack our pili nut husks in 5-millimeter width see-through polyethylene custom bags. We ensure that the bags have undergone vacuum sealing to maintain the fruits’ freshness during transit. We have custom sizes of a minimum 400g of the dried Ethiopia pili nuts in every custom bag. Under the proper storage conditions, in vacuum packages, the nuts can not only withstand the shipping period but can store fresh for at least eleven months, thereafter.

We provide processed dry pili nuts that come from our partner de-pulping plants. The method of extraction involves the insertion into cracker machines, which crush the fruits and separate the seeds from the main shell. Due to the careful process at a minimum speed, we ensure that the kernel or the outer cover of the seed is not damaged and can therefore provide wholesome content for making other products. Common processed products that can come out of the nuts include sweets and oil.

Thus, whether you want the whole fruit for its edible pulp or the seed for processing purposes, we provide raw Ethiopia pili nuts at custom, fair prices. We source our fruits from designate low-lying regions of the country where irrigation is the main production method. Our nuts come from family growers who exercise only organic means of production.
